OVERVIEW

Play Beta is a mobile-first platform built to solve a simple but persistent problem: finding a game, a facility, or a team to play with shouldn't take more effort than actually playing. Designed for players who want to discover sports near them, join open games, or build their own leagues, Play Beta brings discovery, booking, community, and payments into one connected experience. The product covers the full player journey, from discovering nearby games and facilities, to booking a slot, joining a league, chatting with teammates, and completing payment.

THE CHALLENGE

Casual and community sports in Nigeria have long lacked a digital home. Players relying on word-of-mouth or scattered social media groups to find a game, book a facility, or meet new teammates, with no reliable way to see who's playing, where, or when. Facility bookings were often manual and disorganized, offering no real-time visibility into availability. Meanwhile, players looking to build consistent communities, whether through casual pickup games or structured leagues, had no single platform to bring people together and keep them coming back.

THE SOLUTION

Every design decision on Play Beta traced back to one principle: remove the friction between wanting to play and actually playing. Discovery-First Home Experience: The home screen leads with games and facilities near the player, using smart search and filters so players can find something to join within seconds of opening the app. Open Games & Leagues: Players can join open games instantly or create and manage their own leagues, giving both casual players and organized groups a home within the same product. League screens surface schedules, team match-ups, and countdowns to keep engagement active between games. Facility Booking Flow: A dedicated booking flow lets players choose a location, sport, date, and time slot in a few taps, with clear reservation policies surfaced upfront to avoid confusion or no-shows. Facility Discovery: A facilities directory shows nearby venues with ratings, distance, and game history, helping players choose where to play with the same confidence as choosing who to play with. Game Chat & Community: In-game chat was built directly into each open game and league, so coordination between teammates, whether confirming attendance or discussing logistics, happens inside the product instead of scattering across other apps. Seamless Payments & Refunds: Checkout and booking payments were designed around trust, players get a clear payment summary, a QR-code confirmation for facility check-in, and fast refunds when a booking falls through.

THE RESULT

While Play Beta is still early in gathering formal usage data, the product's design was built around measurable outcomes we're actively tracking post-launch: Reducing time-to-first-game, from opening the app to joining or booking a game, into as few taps as possible. Increasing repeat engagement through leagues and open games, giving players a reason to return beyond a single booking. Improving booking completion rates by removing ambiguity from facility availability and reservation policy at the point of booking. Strengthening player trust through transparent payment summaries and fast, visible refunds. Early internal walkthroughs and stakeholder reviews validated the core flows, discovery, booking, and league creation, as intuitive and low-friction, setting a strong foundation for the metrics we expect to see at scale.

Conclusion

Play Beta pushed me to design for a use case that's inherently social and time-sensitive: getting people into a game before the moment passes. By focusing on discovery speed, transparent bookings, and community-building features like leagues and in-game chat, I was able to shape a product that treats finding a game with the same energy as playing one. This project sharpened my ability to design for real-time, community-driven experiences, and reinforced how much friction removal matters when the goal is simply getting people to show up and play.
